Flaw 25: Measure 37 claims open door to strip-mining along Applegate River
Two claimants — in tandem with Copeland Sand and Gravel — have used Measure 37 to secure zoning waivers in their bid to strip-mine farmland straddling the Applegate River in western Jackson County, which provides valuable wildlife and fish habitat. Neighbors are horrified that a massive aggregate mining operation could be launched in the middle of their quiet farming community on 297 acres. Local residents face the prospect of a steady stream of gravel trucks along what the county has designated an "outstanding scenic roadway," and worry that the traffic will overwhelm the community’s historic Applegate Bridge.
