Flaw 37: Measure 37 development claims threaten Oregon’s long-term timber asset

Unlike the rest of the county, Oregon has been successful in protecting our valuable forestland from being paved over for residential development. From 1982 to 2000 only 41,000 acres (0.6%) of western Oregon’s forestland was converted to housing lots — compared to over 560,000 acres lost in California and 262,000 acres lost in Washington.

But unless Measure 37 is modified, Oregon’s success will be undermined. Stimson Lumber Company alone has applied to convert at least 92 square miles of Oregon’s forestland to housing subdivisions.
