Kim McLaury: Where will we get our produce without farms?

Kim McLaury and her husband are raising their four kids in a typical suburban Hillsboro home, miles away from any farms, forests or Measure 37 claims. Yet Kim is actively supporting Measure 49 as a way to correct the problems raised by Measure 37, which she sheepishly admits she voted for.

"I read through the Measure 37 information and thought it was all about property rights. You know, if the government builds a road through your property, they should have to compensate you. But as soon as I sealed the envelope, I knew right off the bat I had made a mistake. That that is not what Measure 37 would turn out to be," Kim says. "I'm scared of what will happen to Oregon and all our special places," she says.

"I have no direct, personal stake in this. Everything is already developed right around here. But being an Oregonian, I want to protect what is Oregon," she says. She cites several examples of what Oregonians could lose, in agriculture, forests and unspoiled spaces. And, "another thing is Oregon produce. The farmer's markets are thriving and people love local produce. All of that is going to be ruined and then where will we get our produce?" she wonders aloud.

"Oregon is a beautiful place. And all that work and effort is being thrown out the door," she notes.

Says Kim, "I'm really scared about what is going to happen to Oregon" if Measure 49 does not pass.
